Cortona (Tuscany)

I have passed Cortona many times on the train while on the way to Assisi, Perugia and some of the other towns I visited. It sits on a steep hill and it's necessary to take a bus or car to the old city center once you get off the train.
The bus dropped me off at Piazza Garibaldi and the above picture is what you see when you look off the panoramic area at that piazza.

When you first got off the train, this is the view you get of Cortona. At the very most high point in the picture is the Santa Margherita church and Fortezza Medicea. Most of my walking in the town consisted of walking from Piazza Garibaldi to the Santa Margherita church. It was a hot July day and I took my time doing the walk.

Inside Cortona there is a big museum dedicated to Etruscan tombs and other findings. On the top floor of the museum I looked out the window and this is what I saw.

I skirted the edge of the city upwards and found many pleasant little alley ways with old houses on one side and a steep drop off with accompanying panormaic view on the other side.

For those of you who don't already know, the author of "Under the Tuscan Sun" wrote the book in the this town and she currently resides here.
Cortona seems like a good place to come and relax and it is nothing like the hustle and bustle of Florence. However, the main street in Cortona is packed with tourist stores selling ceramic plates, artwork and souviners.
